History

Located in southeastern Ventura County is the community of Oak Park. In the 1960’s, developers came together to create an innovative community south of downtown Los Angeles. These developers were Louis Boyar, and now legendary developers, S. Mark Taper and Ben Weinberg.

Oak Park Homes and Real Estate

In 1950, this trio of builders built a community of 17,500 homes, schools, shopping centers, parks, churches, businesses, and other areas all planned in advance. This community is the City of Lakewood, the largest city in the world ever developed by a single developer. While the MDC was off developing, one of radio’s most famous broadcasting duos, Jim and Marian (Driscoll) Jordan, known to the world as “Fibber McGee and Molly” acquired a huge ranch in Ventura County, north of Agoura. Jordan Ranch was located just north of the present site of Oak Park High School, but was burned in a brush fire that ravaged the area in 1970.

It was this ranch that would eventually be the site of Oak Park community. As usable land became scare, prices went up and it became profitable to sell. The Boyers thought it profitable anyway, and decided to take their talents further north and west, selling the ranch to the MDC

First; they extended Kanan Road by two lanes as it was the only way in or out of the new tract. The homes featured underground utilities, street lights, wide sidewalks and extras…all FHA approved.

Oak Park Homes and Real EstateHomes were built just north of Mae Boyar Park, named after Louis Boyar’s late wife and brochures called it, “the new plan for living designed for you…a completely new community in the rolling hills adjacent to Ventura Freeway”. The brochure also exclaimed, “Modern Los Angeles Megalopolis living, with complete shopping, schools, and recreational facilities…a ten acre school site, six acre park, and 18 hole golf course already under development in the first unit of the community.” However, the golf course was never built.

The original Oak Park homes were located on Kanan Road, Birchwood, Oakleaf, Pinewood, Tamarind, and Satinwood.  In 1968, the second unit included Maplegrove, Pinion, Bayberry, and Smoketree.  The third unit, with the first new two-story homes, included Pinion and Joshua.  Others followed and eventually the west side of Kanan was also developed.

Parks

Parks in Oak Park have always been built and maintained by the Rancho Simi Recreation and Parks District.  As development proceeded, parks were added.  There are now 7 parks in Oak Park, including Mae Boyar, Chaparral, Deerhill, Indian Springs, Valley View, Eagle View, and Oak Canyon Community Park, complete with a lake, waterfall, creek, and the Community Center and gardens.  Each has its own distinctive look and amenities for the community to enjoy. Medea Creek is a park in itself and the district maintains many trails in open space as well.

Schools

When Oak Park began, elementary school children attended Brookside Elementary School.  Junior and senior high school students were bussed to Simi Valley, as the Simi Valley Unified School District included Oak Park. The boundaries of various government districts, including schools, were related to the original Spanish Land Grants.

Starting in 1970, eventually three requests to join the Las Virgenes Unified School District were made and denied. But in 1977, they were successful in getting approval to start their own school district, the Oak Park Unified School District. Newsweek Magazine listed the Oak Park Unified School District as one of the best in the country. The district has many award winning schools.Oak Park Homes and Real Estate

Oak Park is unincorporated and remains so to this day by their own choice. However, over the years they did have considerable trouble with their zip codes. They were given the same zip code as Agoura and Agoura Hills and were continually working to convince the outside world that they were indeed part of Ventura County. The problem affected everything from taxes, to deeds and insurance rates. Sterling Oaks

These homes were built in the late 1980s to early 1990s consist of over 80 homes with four and five bedroom floor plans from 2600 ft.² to 3400 ft.². Every home features a three car garage. The majority of homes in Sterling Oaks has a backyard swimming pool and most lots are between 8000 ft.² and 12,000 ft.². This community is nestled up against the hills of the Oak Canyon Community Park so many homes on the eastern side of the neighborhood are not backed by any other home.

Rolling Hills Estates

Rolling Hills Estates boasts a little less than 100 homes built in the late 1980s featuring three, four, and five bedroom floor plans from 1850 ft.² to over 3200 ft.². All homes have either a two or three car garage and most are two-story. These properties range in price from $750,000-$950,000 depending on size, condition, location and features. There are roughly 2 to 3 different floor plans throughout Rolling Hills Estates.

Ridgefield

This community of less than 140 homes were built in the late 1980s and range in price from $600,000-$850,000. These homes are three and four bedroom floor plans from 1700 ft.² to over 2300 ft.². They all feature either a two or three car garage.

Monaco

The homes in Monaco were built between 1990 and 1995 and range in size from 1700 ft.² to about 2400 ft.². These homes have open floor plans, high ceilings, lots of natural light and most have fenced backyards. Many of the homes also have views of the surrounding hills and valleys.

Hillcrest Pointe

Single Family homes built in the early 90s with prices from $650,000 – 3-4 bedrooms next to the Oak Hills Elementary school and about 5 minutes from town.

Chaparral Estates

Chaparral Estates is a small community in Oak Park California just off Kanan Rd and across the street from the Chaparral Park. There are two entrances off Conifer Street on Medea Creek Lane and Sunny go to end. Vista Avenue. There are a little less than 100 homes all built between the 1970s to the 1980s. These homes range in size from about 1300 ft.² to 2400 ft.² with three, four, and five bedroom layouts and two or three car garages. Most of these homes are nestled in amongst rolling hills, green space and are surrounded by hiking trails and of course, the park across the street.

Canyon Cove Duplex Homes

Canyon Cove is a duplex subdivision located in Oak Park California just off Lindero Canyon Road. This is one of the only duplex subdivisions in Oak Park and is made up of a total of 74 homes. These properties feature one and two car garages with layouts from 1600 to 2000 ft.².

Bent Tree Subdivision

Bent Tree is a subdivision in Oak Park California between Hawthorne Drive and Kanan Rd east of Indian Springs Park and Valley View Park. This collection of about 165 homes were built in the 1980s and each has three, four, or five bedroom layouts in sizes from 1900 ft.² to over 2800 ft.². Each of these homes features either a two or three car garage with open floor plans, high ceilings and a choice of four distinct floor plans.

Regency Hills in Oak Park CA

Monte Carlo is located in Oak Park California and consists of about 150 homes built between 1992 and 1994. The community is surrounded by rolling hills and palm tree lined streets and most homes feature two or three car garages with two-story layouts between 1500 – 2400 ft.². Lot sizes are between 6000 and 8000 ft.² and homes are priced between $650,000 and $900,000. There are two hillsides on each side of this community with walking trails and beautiful trees throughout the community.
